Wind Up Doll

Starting to get used to editing in Photoshop a bit more now... this is part of a project I am currently working on, the theme is everyday objects and under this theme I decided to chose Trafficking and how children and older females are used as objects being resold and abused rather than real people. I am trying to demonstrate this through the characteristics of a doll to make the victim appear fragile and innocent, this will also relate to people more as most people had their own doll that they cherished so by making a person like a doll makes the urge to protect stronger and that is what I am trying to do with this project, get people to want to help her.

Inky Life Drawing

For this piece I used mainly charcoal to get more of a feel for the shading on the woman's body, I also found that the use of charcoal adds to the appearance of a soft skin texture. I then added the orange Ink background to give a more 3D look to the piece as warm colours create depth, it also brought out the contrast within shading on the body as it wasn't just being compared to white paper.

For this piece I started off with ink of a stick to find the proportions and shape of the body without having to be too precise. Then for the shading I used various other colours of ink combining cool and warm colours to create depth and a delicate feel to the piece.

Everyday Objects

Here is an observational drawing I did of everyday objects (my current project theme is everyday objects). The original contrast didn't come through very well on the scanner so I took it into Photoshop and adjusted the white balance to darken the lines more and make it more contrasted to give more definition to the objects.

'Logical Flow'

I made this in response to Michael Busselle's 'Logical Flow' piece from the book Creative Digital Photography by Michael Busselle. I chose three unrelated pictures just as he did for his piece, his piece seemed to evoke the idea of a memory or time pass, so I thought I'd follow that theme but using my own images (only the clock face is from Google, the rest is my photography.) I chose to respond to Busselle's piece because I really liked the dream-like/ghostly effect it gave the image, whilst also widening my knowledge of photo manipulation on Photoshop (even though this is very basic).

Digital Wolf

Still continuing on improving my digital painting skills, I also decided to give myself a harder task of digitally painting a Wolf. This challenged me because this is the second successful wolf I have drawn the first being in pencil which I will upload soon. I decided to draw most of the attention to the eyes as they are usually the most popular thing about the appearance of a wolf in paintings and photos as their eyes tell you a bit more about their characteristics which is something very important. I tried to make this wolfs appearance differ from the first one I drew to show different gender maybe, characteristics, etc because I feel this is important to make something your own.

Red Indian Digital Painting

I have been given a summer project about every day objects and I am associating my piece with Red Indians and the object it shall be about is a flute from their time as music is timeless and can tell any story. So to meet my own personal wants to improve my digital work and to produce something to help me achieve something toward my summer project I produced this Red Indian. I am proud of him as I've never successfully done a portrait in colour well on Photoshop before so this has made me happy!

Christopher Walken

For the digital portrait I chose to do Christopher Walken as he is amongst my favourite actors. This portrait is slightly off (mainly his right eye and the proportions of his face) ,however, I feel proud that this is my first 'free hand' portrait that I have produced on Photoshop. However now that I have done this I want to extend my 'personal project' and produce a more realistic and detailed digital portrait and hopefully work my way to producing a photo-realistic piece.

The Beginning of a Personal Project

Here I have been looking at improving my digital art skills, so to do this I went on to a tutorial on Youtube about how to draw eyes on Photoshop, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dN-wtDTseys. I found this very useful and therefor have produced a digitally drawn eye. This is the beggining of my own individual summer project I have set for myself which is to produce a very realistic portrait on Photoshop, yes it seems a very small task as it's not in response to anything or to communicate anything but this project is personal to me for my own skill development as digital art is something I admire and struggle a lot with.

101 Creations

This is an Illustration I did for a music book for a variety of instruments for instrumental country music named '101 creations'. I did this Illustration before the college course I am on now and had no lessons in Art as I didn't do it as a GCSE. I produced the covers using felt tip pen as the person who wanted the illustrations wanted it to be slightly themed around 101 dalmatians (hence the title) and just generally cartoony all over.
The only things that bother me about the covers now is my choice of font, it was very basic and could have been changed to suit the artwork more.

Front cover (left).
Back cover (below).

Add a Splash of Personality

I haven't drawn anything like skulls in a while but rather than just drawing a skull I thought I'd make it a little more interesting. So I decided to try and link it to the idea of what makes us unique? In the sense that who we are changes our appearance from being the same and to me this isn't just shown on someones surface it's what lies underneath that defines us (without sounding too cliched). I chose this design as a straight forward representation of a more creative personality by applying different colours and repeated patterns whilst adding a subtle tint of a quirky cheeky personality in the face.

Tints of Characteristics

Here I have taken a pencil drawing of Helena Bonham-Carter (which I gave a slightly cartoon-like look to it to suit her character more). I have then uploaded it to Photoshop, coloured it in and played around with the hue and saturation, it was only a quick and simple edit but I think it has made the drawing more interesting and linked to how the actress shows many different 'colours' with each different role that she plays.

Felt Tip Portrait

Here is a portrait of a girl called Lydia. I sketched this in pencil first (like the other portraits) and then went over the lines and coloured it in with felt tip.

Biro Portrait

Here is a portrait of a girl called Shanice. I sketched this first in pencil and then went over it with a Biro to look at using line to create tone rather than smudges and shading.

It's Time to Get Inky!

This is my first attempt using quill and ink. I chose to do a portrait as my first try because I wanted to challenge myself. I added the blobs of ink just to see whether or not it would look good, I now feel it would look better with a more decorative style portrait like the artist Minjae Lee's work. His stlye is something I would like to attempt myself very soon as he's one of my favourite illustrative artists.

Photos & Editing

Here is a photograph I took earlier today.
I have taken it into Photoshop, sharpened it,
de-saturated it and adjusted the contrast levels
to create a more ominous atmosphere to the photo.

Fine Writer to Photoshop

Here is a portrait of my friend Aimee. I produced this using fine writer, and painting water on to create some shading; I also used some grey water colour to enhance the shaded areas. I then took it into Photoshop, added some textures and adjusted the colour balance.

Burn The Flag - The Beginning is Near

Here is an album cover I produced for a local band called 'Burn The Flag'. I produced it using different textures and filters on Photoshop  drawing on Photoshop with a Photoshop tablet and adding text and final colorization.https://www.facebook.com/Burntheflagofficial?fref=ts They haven't uploaded finished pieces yet but check them out :)

Summery Landscapes

I did some photography in the peak district in the summer 2012. These three are my favorite photos because I think they capture how beautiful the place was.

Dressy Pot

Here is a pot I produced in ceramics. I was given the theme of ladies fashion to design the pot with, so I chose to make it follow the figure of a woman and also follow the theme of fashion with a dress-type appearance. I made it overlapping thin layers of clay that I had put a pattern into using a knife. I chose blue and brown glazes so it would clash and go well at the same time, like how some fashion shouldn't really work but it does.

'Stop the clocks, cut off the telephone'

Here is my final outcome for my recent painting and drawing unit, we had to produce an outcome in response to a poem. The poem I chose is 'Stop the clocks, cut off the telephone' by W.H.Auden. This poem is from the point of view of a widow and how she sees no point in the world anymore. I tried to capture this feeling by having everything streaming into grey and make her out of feathers that are blowing away in the wind to show how shes slowly falling apart.

Pencil portrait

Here are two pencil portraits of my friend Leanne.

Childhood

This is for letter C of my A-Z book project. I chose childhood because that's the time of our lives that shapes how we are in the future. I intended to make it with an equal balance between happy, sad, scary, etc and the emotion in the picture is to be determined by the viewers opinion on childhood. I produced this using a photo that I developed from a negative but by painting the developer on it made some interesting marks which I used to make the things surrounding the child, I then took that into photoshop added some filters to it and then drew on the girl with the ballon.

A-Z project

These are three examples of work from my Graphics unit last year. The project was to produce an alphabetic book about myself, using a wide range of styles and techniques.
This is the first page in the book, I decided to do a title page as it introduces the reader to me before the book begins. The self portrait was made from pen and fine writers. I chose to make the background more quirky, busy and colourful because people say those three words describe me well.
(Both images below were produced using a Photoshop tablet)
For this page (letter B in the book) I chose Boris Johnson as he's a demonstration that not everyone has to be exceedingly dull to be a politician. I tried to capture his personality by drawing him from an image whilst also communicating the British politician side as well, I did this by making the use of lines more loose and less specific and having the flag appear to be moving behind him to create a more energetic feel.
For letter 'S' I chose to do supernatural because supernatural ideas/ themes are inspiring to me because I find the weird things a lot more appealing as you can produce a completely knew idea for people to play around with, I also find the supernatural great as an inspiration for music as well as the visual outcomes.
